A pair of famille rose porcelain slender baluster vases and covers
19th Century, probably Samson
Painted in a vibrant palette with phoenixes with wings spread perched on pierced rockwork in a landscape of flowering peony, prunus and other flowers, the shoulders painted with descending borders of iron-red and gilt ornament, flowerheads on a turquoise cell-pattern ground, and cartouches of landscapes and precious objects on a pale green cracked-ice ground, the shallow domed covers with Buddhistic lion finials (one vase with about eight rim chips), the carved giltwood stands each with three scroll feet, with later carved giltwood stand

Lot Essay

A pair of vases and covers of this pattern were formerly in Charles de Beistegui's collection and are illustrated in a photo from the 1940's of the Salon Jaune, Chteau de Groussay, Charles de Beistegui's chteau in France (see Sotheby's sale catalogue, Chteau de Groussay, 2-6 June 1999, vol III, p. 197).
