Although negroes had been represented in various art forms for centuries, it was really with the strengthening of trade links with Africa and Asia in the latter part of the 17th century that the fashion for depicting 'blackamoors' gained in popularity. In particular, Venice, with its vast sea-trading empire, developed a tradition for this genre. The present bust, with its proudly erect head, is typical in its depiction of the subject as a 'noble savage'.
