Portrait of King Charles I in three positions

This picture is after the portrait of Charles I in three positions, in the Royal Collection (see O. Millar, Tudor, Stuart and Early Georgian Pictures in the Collection of Her Majesty, The Queen, London, 1963, I, p. 96, no. 146, II, pl. 70). The Italian sculptor Bernini was commissioned to produce a bust of King Charles I and based his work on van Dyck's representation of the King which was to be sent to him in Rome. Bernini's bust was destroyed in the fire at Whitehall Palace in 1698 and van Dyck's portrait was to remain in Rome until 1802; it was eventually bought by King George IV in 1822.
