Lot Essay

The subject is taken from the parable of The Prodigal Son, told in Luke 15:11-32. Rather than showing the more usual scene of the son welcomed home by the father, the son is depicted amongst the swine, contemplating his life, while the house to which he will shortly return is seen in the distance. It would appear that this scene is based on Drer's well known print of 1496 (Bartsch 28).
