Lot Essay

Mantegna worked on his Triumphs of Caesar series during the late 1480s and early 1490s. In 1506 they were installed in a palazzo near the Porta Pusterla in Mantua. Each panel was placed between framing pilasters probably as Mantegna originally intended, and which are recorded by Andreani in these woodcuts.
