Shaped circular and on a shaped circular spreading foot chased with scrolls, shells and matted acanthus leaves, the body cast, chased and applied with flowers and foliage, with similar shaped rim, the sides with two shaped cartouches engraved with inscription, with two leaf-capped bracket handles, the domed fluted cover with detachable branch and flower finial, marked on base, cover and finial

Lot Essay

The Catterick Gold Cup of 1823 was run on the 23 April over two miles. The race was won by the Duke of Leeds' Zohrab. In the same year Zoihrab also won the Stockton Gold Cup, the Doncaster King's Plate and a race at Liverpool.
