Each inverted baluster-shaped and on spreading circular foot with gadrooned rim, the part spirally-fluted bodies with two leaf-capped scroll handles, the high domed part spirally fluted covers with gadrooned borders and reeded bud finial, the bodied each engraved with a coat-of-arms within scrolling foliage, the cover with a crest, marked on bodies and covers

Lot Essay

Douglas Bennett in Irish Georgian Silver, London, 1972, p. 313-314 discusses the difficulty in identifying the maker whose punch, J.L within a shaped oval punch, appears on this lot. During the latter years of the 18th century there were three silversmiths whose initials make them possible candidates.
