Lot Essay

The Italianate classical ruin views of this secrtaire abattant relate to a group of such panels that appears to have been made by specialised marqueteur workshops, manufacturing them for different bnistes such as Louis-Nol Malle (matre in 1765), Daniel Deloose (matre in 1788), Pierre Macret, Pierre Denizot (matre in 1782), Nicolas Petit (matre in 1761), Charles Topino (matre in 1773) and Christophe Wolff (matre in 1755) etc. Louis-Nol Malle, talented marqueteur as well as bniste, could conceivably have have been such a marqueteur, supplying marquetry panels to other bnistes.

A related secrtaire abattant by Louis-Nol Malle from the property of Claude Cartier [+] was sold at Sotheby's Monaco, 14 December 1996, lot 74 (FF 1.882.500).
