Lot Essay

Jean Sen, called 'le Pre' and born circa 1695, was the first of a famous dynasty of chair-makers and was established in the rue de Clry. He became master joiner around 1709, but used his stamp only from 1743 when new regulations made it compulsory.

A similar pair of Louis XV side chairs stamped SENE.LEPERE was sold anonymously Ader Picard Tajan, Paris, 5 December 1989, lot 165 (FF 90.000). Please see lot 53 of this sale for a giltwood fauteuil by the same menusier.
