Lot Essay
Jean Georges Schlichtig, matre in 1765.
Jean Georges Schlichtig, born in Germany, only received his matrise when he was in his forties. The presence of the cypher of Marie-Antoinette on a commode now in the Muse du Louvre (P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Franais du XVIIIe Sicle, Paris, 1989, p. 792) indicates that he also supplied the Royal court.
The parquetry on the panels is very similar to that used by Jean-Franois Leleu, except that the flowerheads in the trellis are larger, such as on one commode sold anonymously at Ader Picard Tajan, Paris, 10 December 1971, lot 102, and more prominently on a commode sold anonymously Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, 26 May 1913, lot 61. The Vitruvian scroll frieze with its foliage is identical to that on a commode supplied to the cabinet intrieur of Louis XVI at the chteau de Compigne on 28 August 1786 by Guillaume Beneman.
