Lot Essay

Pierre-Antoine Bellang, matre in 1788.

Pierre-Antoine Bellang (1758 - 1827), who was working through the Empire and Restauration periods in rue Neuve-Saint-Denis, was one of the Imperial and Royal Court suppliers. Under the Restauration, Bellang was bniste brevet du Garde-meuble de la Couronne, while his work remained highly regarded during the Charles X period: La qualit, la richesse et la grce des objets d'bnisterie qui sont sortis de ses ateliers, aussi bien que l'anciennet de son tablissement, ont acquis M. Bellang une rputation qu'il vient encore d'acrotre par l'ameublement du Pavillon de Saint-Ouen. A very closely related fauteuil is illustrated in D. Ledoux-Lebard, Le Mobilier Franais du XIXe Sicle, Paris, 1989, p. 55.

The distinctive shape of the armrests is probably first used on armchairs supplied in 1810 for the dining-room of the Impratrice at Compigne by Jacob Desmalter. This motif was popular throughout the end of the Empire and during the Restauration period (L. de Gror, Les arts dcoratifs de 1790 1850, Fribourg, 1985, p. 181, ill. 341).
