A LOUIS XV STYLE SAVONNERIE CARPET
Early 20th Century
The ivory field with a central rococo shaped panel with fanlight and shell-motifs around a floral wreath enclosing the rosette centrepiece, issuing bold scrolling acanthus fronds in various pastel colours overlapping to form panels linked by floral wreaths, bands and swags, the shaped border issuing similar motifs and formed of architectural mouldings enclosing panels including fleur-de-lys motifs, outer 'moulded' cartouche border and plain brown stripe, full pile, wefts breaking in a few places, mostly along mid-line

Lot Essay

The original design for this carpet was made by Pierre-Josse Perrot, and was produced a number of times for Royal Palaces between 1738 and 1750. One example was sent as a diplomatic gift to Sweden and is still to be found in the Royal Collection in Stockholm (Jarry, M. Carpets of the Manufactory de la Savonnerie, Leigh-on-Sea, 1966, fig. 42 and p. 35).
