Gnther Frg has created a strong body of photographic works since as early as 1982. Most of these large-scale photographs focus on historically significant - and in some cases ideologically problematic - architectural monuments, including the IG Farben building in Frankfurt, the Villa Wittgenstein in Vienna and the Citt Universitaria in Rome.
Despite the often dubious histories of these buildings, Frg's photos maintain a distanced objectivity and focus primarily on the formal qualities of the spatial relationships between the various architectonic elements. Through their harsh, frontal perspective and large scale, these works frequently appear monumental in an awe-inspiring or even threatening manner.
The viewer's eye is consciously drawn to the simple geometric forms and repetition of lines reinforced by the play of light and shadow. In all his works, Frg emphasises the dominance of ratio over intuition, order over chaos, and the geometric over the organic.
