In 1904, the year of the execution of Jeune fille lisant, Renoir was just recovering from a bad attack of arthritis and was advised that the heat of the Midi would benefit him greatly. Consequently he moved with his family to a house called La Poste in the small village of Cagnes-sur-Mer. He loved it there so much that the following year he bought a house, Les Collettes, in the same village. When he was able to work again after months of near paralysis, Renoir painted some of the most sensual nudes of his entire career, such as Bather, La Source. The sickness and pain that Renoir suffered at this time made him acutely aware of the beauty and innocent joy of youth. He was further inspired to portray his own children and other young, local girls, creating enduring images of youth such as Jeune fille lisant.

The late Franois Daulte confirmed the authenticity of this painting.
