The Solomon Guggenheim exhibition catalogue of 1988 commented on this work: "As the inscription on the back of the canvas indicates, this little work...was painted at Sorgues in the summer of 1917, when Pierre Reverdy was there. It belongs to a series of tableaux objets related to the bas-reliefs of the sculptor Laurens, and whose exquisite compositions are inscribed in a variety of shapes; rectangles, lozenges, octagons, mandorlas. The block-lettered signature is integrated into a decorative composition made up of four compartments" (op. cit.).
