Lot Essay
Fleeing the German occupation of France, Lger arrived in New York in October, 1940. He lived on West 40th Street in Manhattan, and rented a cottage near Lake Champlain in upstate New York where he found nearby an abandoned, overgrown farm with a barn full of rusting machinery. Lger's American landscapes are usually filled with mechanical elements juxtaposed with the abundatn and sometimes strange flora found in different parts of the country.
Of his work of this period, Lger wrote "But during these years in America I do feel I have worked with greater intensity and achieved more expression than in my previous work. In this country there is definitely romantic atmosphere in the good sense of the word - an increased sense of movement and violence." (J. J. Sweeney, "Eleven Europeans in America: Fernand Lger" in The Museum of Modern Art Bulletin, Vol. XIII, nos. 4-5, New York, 1946, pp. 13-14)
