Another version of the same subject is in the University Art Museum, Princeton, F.L. Richardson, Andrea Schiavone, Oxford, 1980, no. 198. Ceres is usually represented carrying torches, symbolising her search for her daughter Prosperina, taken to the Underworld by Pluto. The grief-stricken earth was barren for the four months of the year that Proserpina was away, the flowers of Spring heralding her return.
