Lot Essay

The circle and the line inscription on the lower part of the drawing corresponds to a price code found on Florentine 17th Century drawings. A drawing by Callot in New Haven bears three circles and a dot by the same hand, P. Chon et al., Jacques Callot, exhib. cat., Muse historique lorrain, Nancy, 1992, no. 59.
The pose of the figure in the present drawing is probably inspired by one of Michelangelo's wax models for his David in the Casa Buonarotti, Florence.
