Lot Essay

Ismail, Sultan of Morocco (1672-1727) descended from the Filali dynasty and had a very large harem, for which he even requested a daughter of King Louis XIV. Another version of this drawing, more finished and with different figures in the background was illustrated in Maroc Tourisme, 1957 (see the photograph attached to the present lot).
