Lot Essay
The sheet comes from an album of unusual width. Among the twenty-four albums in the Louvre only one corresponds in size to the present one, M. Srullaz et al., Dessins d'Eugne Delacroix, Paris, 1984, II, no. 1753. The album still bears the makers' label 'Rue de la Monnaie n23 Le Marchal Md de Couleurs Paris' and was used by Delacroix around 1827. The Louvre has two other albums bought by Delacroix in the same shop, Le Marchal, and used in the years 1820-5 and 1825-30, M. Srullaz, op. cit., nos. 1748 and 1752. Delacroix also mentions in his journal two visits to Le Marchal in 1824 to acquire frames. Delacroix seems to have bought his albums as he needed them, for the English sketchbook, now in the Louvre, was bought on Piccadilly in London.
Delacroix's posthumous sale in 1864 included about fifty albums divided in four lots from 662 to 664 (including 663a).
The drawing probably depicts a landscape in Northern France.
