Lot Essay

This pastel could correspond to the one mentioned by Lazare Duvaux in his Journal as 'le portrait de l'abb de l'Allouette, aumnier de Louis XIV dans le cabinet de La Live de Jully', quoted in P. Ratouis de Limay, Le pastel en France au Dix-huitime sicle, Paris, 1946, p. 22, note 1. Ambroise l'Allouette (1653-1724) was chaplain of the Eglise Metropolitaine and a canon of the Church of Sainte Opportune in Paris.
Probably the first artist specializing in pastel portaits, Vivien was received at the Academy in 1698 and in 1704 exhibited 21 pastels at the Salon. He later became first painter to the courts of Bavaria and Cologne.
