Possibly related to the satyr in L'Automne, one of the Quatre saisons executed by Watteau for Crozat's dining room, the present drawing is one of a series of studies of nudes all of whom are seen leaning forward, now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Courtauld Institute, the Louvre and the Fondation Custodia, Paris (P. Rosenberg and L.-A. Prat, op. cit., nos. 373-6).
Margaret Morgan Grasselli believes that the drawing relates to L'Automne and dates is to 1715, as well as Pierre Rosenberg and Louis-Antoine Prat. Marianne Roland Michel proposes a date one year later.
