Lot Essay

A return to Fssli's composition of 1770, now in the British Museum, G. Schiff, op. cit., no. 374. The present drawing differs in the definition of the clouds and the shaping of the upper edge. As Gert Schiff notes, the figure of Paul is based on Johan Tobias Sergel's terracotta Faun of 1769, in Stockholm, Nationalmuseum, G. Schiff, op. cit., p. 439.
