Lot Essay

In the 16th century Spain and southern Italy were both under Hapsburg control, and cultural links were particularly strong. It is not surprising, therefore, that one finds elements of both artistic schools in the present pair of angels; the facial types are more reminiscent of Italian work, while the elaborate silver decoration of the drapery tends to suggest a Spanish origin.
