Lot Essay

The somewhat mannered, almost dance-like, quality of this figure is characteristic of Sienese sculpture of the fifteenth century, and can be compared to such works as the wooden Annunciate Virgin and St. Gabriel by Jacopo della Quercia (illustrated in Carli, loc. cit.). Although difficult to say with certainty, the present figure probably represents St. Roch.
