Lot Essay

It is interesting to note that there is a long inscription on the reverse of the present bust describing its conception. From the inscription we know that it was executed by a florentine Servite friar in the year 1730 in 'this convent of Mary'. Unfortunately damage to the area of the inscription has eradicated the precise name of the church for which it was made. The 'Sorrowful Virgin' was one of the most common images of the Servite order and it is fitting that this bust, possibly created as an image of private devotion, depicts the Virgin with her head tilted in contemplation of the fate of her Son.
