Lot Essay

This bust is attributable to Berthel Thorvaldsen on both stylistic grounds and on the basis of its provenance. Stylistically, it is extremely close to the three busts of Lord Lucan's daughters, executed by Thorvaldsen in circa 1816-1817 (see lot 70), and because these have come from the same source, there is no reason to doubt that this bust was also purchased from Thorvaldsen during one of Lucan's visits to Rome, and may, in fact, represent Lord Lucan's fourth daughter depicted in the guise of a mythological goddess.
