Lot Essay

A pair of related card-tables, with ribbon-guilloche frieze, serpentined legs terminating in voluted feet, and Tibats hinges, was sold from the Michael Lipitch Collection, Sotheby's London, 22 May 1998, lot 82. The legs of this table display confronted C-scrolled cartouches in the French fashion popularised by Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, London, 1754; and this motif together with serpentined feet terminating in voluted scrolls appear on a set of armchairs supplied in 1767 by Thomas Chippendale (d. 1779) for Nostell Priory, Yorkshire (C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol. II, figs. 140 and 141). The Tibats hinge, which has been recorded on a group of card-tables, also carved with flowered and ribbon-wrapped edges, was illustrated in 1966 in P. Thornton, 'A Signed Hinge', Furniture History, 1966, pp. 44-45, pl. XXIII, fig. A.
