Lot Essay
This table has several characteristics that are associated with the Dublin firm of Mack, Williams and Gibton (circa 1812-1829), including the thickly reeded edge to the top, the large leaf-carved 'hip' on the leg and the thick baluster columns. The firm is recognized for the superb timbers employed and their high quality of workmanship which is often compared to that of Gillows of London and Lancaster. Much of the furniture they produced was inspired by designs published by Thomas Hope and George Smith.
A related three-pedestal dining-table bearing the firm's label, was sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 21 January 1999, lot 319 and a breakfast-table stamped by the firm, was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 6 February 1997, lot 171. Another very similar dining-table was sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 14-15 October 1994, lot 322, which interestingly had a four digit number stamped on each pedestal, another characteristic of Mack, Williams and Gibton. A four-pedestal dining-table, also attributed to the firm was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 15 April 1999, lot 161.
