Lot Essay

There are several varieties of this medal by Milicz. The portrait is taken from an unsigned woodcut (see Hirth, Kulturgeschichtliches Bilderbuch, Munich 1923, S.26, nr.40). An unidentified artist signing his medals with the monogram WS reissued this medal, using legends taken from another medal of Charles V by Hieronymus Magdeburger, and dated it 1541 (see Katz 527b).
