A GERMAN SILVER-GILT MOUNTED AGATE MORTAR, PESTLE AND STAND
Mid-17th Century, unmarked, agate body possibly a replacement
The faceted octagonal mortar of purplish grey and pink agate, tapering at the base, the flat detachable rim mount finely engraved with a band of scrolling foliage and flower heads on matted ground, the similar tapering cylindrical agate pestle with silver-gilt handle similarly chased and engraved with panels of foliage divided by beaded ribs, the two-handled openwork stand on four scroll and foliage feet, the sides pierced and engraved with two bands of foliage with twisted column supports at intervals, the scroll handles applied with foliage and cold painted beneath in red
