The mechanism enclosed within a drum-shaped container, the cover with dial observed through two semi-circular apertures with single pointer, with cartouche depicting a female figure astride a hippocampus with a lute and a book, the cover additionally engraved with exotic birds, scrolls and foliage, the side with band decoration of a hunting scene with bears, hounds, wild boar, foxes, rabbits and game birds within a wooded landscape, with clasp and circular panel folding out to reveal a compass with needle in suspension, the silvered dial finely engraved, the inside of the cover engraved with an adventurer with dividers and scale, the hinge with scroll and foliate decoration, the cover engraved SANGVINEVS, the back with mounting for a plate designed to fit on a carriage or other vehicle
