A SOUTH GERMAN GILT-METAL SPIEGELUHR
Unsigned, Augsburg or Nrnberg, circa 1580
The case with acanthus-cast socle base on paw feet, foliate pierced dome above supporting a two-handled vase, the drum-shaped movement case with a band cast with foliate strap-work with sunbursts and addorsed fawns playing pipes, the astrolabic dial (now lacking hands) with outer 24-hour chapter ring with touch pieces and concentric inner twice-X11 chapter ring, the cupula surmount with arched balustrades housing an automaton gilt-metal barrel pierced and engraved with the days of the week and their respective deities, the later movement with circular gilt-brass plates and four turned brass pinned pillars, the backplate engraved with scrolling foliage and with a foliate pierced and engraved footed clock to the verge escapement (lacking verge staff), chain fusee for the going train and resting barrels for the strike and alarm trains (both now vestigial)
