Lot Essay

Dated by Sutton (loc. cit.) circa 1675-1680, the present picture is a rare example of a nocturnal scene by the artist. Sutton also points out that the model who served for the mustachioed soldier on the far side of the table also appears in de Hooch's Officer paying a woman in a stable, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and in his Serving woman and an officer at Saltram, Plympton (National Trust, op. cit., nos. 111 and 126, pls. 114 and 129).
