Lot Essay

Charles Jennens (1700-1773) best known for his close association with Handel (he worked with him on the libretto for The Messiah), formed a major collection of old master pictures for his London house. He also patronised such contemporaries as Francis Hayman and owned Sir Thomas Hudson's celebrated portrait of Handel now in the National Portrait Gallery, London.
