Lot Essay

A hitherto unrecorded version of the picture of identical size in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (W.G. Constable, Canaletto, Oxford, 1962, and subsequent editions revised by J.G. Links, I, pl. 35, and II, no. 156). The two paintings correspond closely except in the lower left corner, where the two men seated in the boat in the present work replace the single, quite different, figure of the Vienna picture. The handling of paint is very similar to that in The Molo, Venice with the Doge's Palace and the Piazzetta from the Bacino di San Marco sold in these Rooms 10 July 1998, lot 81, which is itself a version of identical size of a major work by Canaletto of the early 1730s.
