The present lot is very similar to a Saint Luke, which Burchard believed to be by Rubens, an attribution which has been rejected by Hans Vlieghe (Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard, Part VIII, Saints, II, London, 1973, pp. 116-117, no. 128 and fig. 79); he records that an attribution to Jan van Teylingen had been proposed for that panel. The style of the present work is suggestive of Artus Wolfaerts (for whom, see H. Vlieghe, 'Zwischen van Veen und Rubens: A. Wolfaerts [1581-1641]', etc., Wallraf-Richartz-Jahrbuch, IX, 1977, pp. 98ff.).
