This picture corresponds closely to Terbrugghen's Boy with wine glass of 1623 in the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh (see B. Nicolson, Caravaggism in Europe, I and III, second edn., revised by L. Vertova, Oxford, 1979, p. 195, no. 1144, illustrated), which Nicolson had previously considered to be a doubtful work in his catalogue raisonn (Hendrick Terbrugghen, London, 1958, p. 111, no. B80, pl. 35b). The present work differs from the Raleigh work most noticeably in the addition of the boy's head-dress, the altered position of his left forefinger, and its marginally larger dimensions.
