An attribution to Jakobus Schlachter (active in Mannheim in 1733) has been suggested on the basis of a comparison with five similar hunting scenes: a single work, signed and dated, offered for sale at Tajan, Htel Drouot, Paris, on 26 June 1992, lot 20 and a series of four scenes, of which three are signed and dated, also offered by Tajan, on 29 June 1989, lot 42.

Lot Essay

A series of similar hunting scenes depicting the court of Karl Philipp von der Pfalz (1661-1742) is in the Jagdschloss Grunewald, Berlin. This type of hunting was popular at the courts of the German Fuersts in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. A further series of sixteen similar scenes is in Schloss Schwetzingen, near Karlsruhe. We are grateful to Mr. Wolf Trotha for identifying the landscape as near the Rhein.
