The style of this picture is close to that of Bernardino Luini, see for example his Madonna of the Rose Hedge in the Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan (G. Bora et al., The Legacy of Leonardo. Painters in Lombardy 1490-1530, Milan, 1998, fig. 247).
We are grateful to Dr. Michel Kwakkelstein for pointing out that the artist was probably familiar with the drawing by Leonardo of the same subject (Courtauld Gallery, London) which shows the same position of the Magdalen (oral communication, 24 May 1999).
