We are grateful to Dr. Sebastian Schtze for confirming the attribution (letter 30 May 1999). He considers the picture to be 'a typical and particularly fine example of Stanzione's work around 1630', and compares it to the Sybil in the Galleria Doria Pamphilj and the Saint Catherine in the Lemme Collection, Rome (S. Schtze, Massimo Stanzione, Naples, 1992, nos. A16 and A21).
