Lot Essay

The prime version, dated 1513 or 1514, is in the collection of Her Majesty the Queen (Shearman, op. cit., pp. 180-1, no. 183, pl. 161); this differs considerably in the heads of Judith and Holofernes, in the landscape and in showing a large tent in place of the left part of the background. Other versions are in the Muse Ariana, Geneva, signed and dated 1525, and at Berkeley Castle, dated 1536.
