A German Sporting Crossbow And Cranequin
Circa 1600
With steel bow retained by its original cords with green woollen pom-poms, and original string of twisted cord (iron stirrup missing), wooden tiller (minor cracks) swelling towards the middle and inlaid with engraved horn washers along each side, the top and bottom covered with white staghorn engraved with scrollwork, foliage, grotesque human and animal masks, a standing human figure, and with an eagle infront of the nut (some cracks to staghorn, some engraving worn), later folding back-sight (fore-sight missing), later wooden nut (bolt-clip missing), lever trigger with green woollen pom-poms and swivelling safety-catch, folding set trigger, and iron cranequin with plain gear-box with raised central band deeply struck for a maker's mark (mark missing, wooden handle and retaining loop perhaps replaced)
