Lot Essay

According to the owner, lots 189-192 were gifts from the Duke and Duchess of Windsor to her father. The picture on this page depicts the Duchess wearing the neglige, as well as the pendant and the brooch, as earclips. The photograph was taken upon her arrival at the famed Lido nightclub on December 10th 1969. She and her escort for the evening, Maurice Chevalier, were attending a Gypsy night celebrating the premiere of a new revue, the "Grand Prix".

The Duchess of Windsor, for whom Edward VIII abdicated his rights to the throne, was known to have one of the most impressive jewellery collections in the world. The present jewels, elegant and extremely wearable, are representative of the Duke and Duchess' unerring good taste.
