Lot Essay

The British registered barque Ravenswood was built by W.H. Potter & Son at Liverpool in 1877. Owned by Walmsley's, also of Liverpool, she was registered at 1,089 tons and measured 218 feet in length with a 36 foot beam.

Harold Sniffen's Jacobsen Checklist notes only one oil portrait of Ravenswood executed in 1897, plus a sketch owned by the Mariner's Museum at Newport News, Virginia.
