Lot Essay

The American 'J' Class sloop Enterprise successfully defended the America's Cup after a difficult series of defender trials against Weetamoe, Whirlwind, Yankee, Vanitie and Resolute.
She is seen in the painting ghosting towards Newport in company with her rivals and Vara (at the far left), Harold Vanderbilt's motor yacht. Brenton Reef Lightship is to the left of centre.

Harold Vanderbilt was victorious in 1930, 1934 and 1937, racing 'J' Class sloops, retaining the America's Cup for the United States in some of the most spectacular yachting ever seen off Newport.
