JOHN CORBET ANDERSON. Joseph Guy, of Nottingham, hand-coloured, tinted lithographed by and after Corbet Anderson, London: published by the artist, Kingsland, and by F. Lillywhite, Islington, 2nd April 1853, 416 x 280mm., unframed.
Down & West 20 (an example of the earlier issue of May 20th 1851 is reproduced on p.85); The Noblest Game 34 (reproducing a coloured version of the later issue). As a batsman Joseph Guy (1814-73) of Nottinghamshire and All England was a"a model for all to observe, a forward player standing erect at the crease, unleashing an array of scoring strokes all round the wicket". In Haygarth's view this was a "capital" portrait. Cardus & Arlott quote the contemporary quip: "Joe Guy, all ease and elegance, fit to play before the Queen in her Majesty's parlour".
JOHN CORBET ANDERSON. Alfred Diver, born at Cambridge, July 6th 1824, tinted lithographed by and after Corbet Anderson, London: Lillywhite & Wisden, July 18th 1858, 416 x 280mm., unframed.
JOHN CORBET ANDERSON. Wisden. Born at Brighton (Sketches at Lord's No. 6), hand-coloured lithograph by and after Corbet Anderson, London: published by the artist, Kingsland, and F. Lillywhite, Islington, March 1st 1852, 222 x 154mm., unframed.
Down & West 19, pp. 126-27; The Noblest Game 32. Only 5 foot 4 1/2 inches tall, John Wisden (1826-84) played in 82 matches for Sussex between 1845 and 1863. Anderson's famous print of the diminutive bowler, suggestive of his cheerful disposition and artful technique, includes a picturesque view of Brighton and the windmill-topped downs.
Light spotting, some marginal browning.
