Surrey Team 1888, team photograph, 250 x 305mm., with printed title and team list, framed and glazed.
As one of the first counties to field an eleven, Surrey has always been regarded as one of the finest counties both in terms of tradition and achievements on the field. The Surrey team of this period reigned supreme, winning the championship seven years in a row between 1887 and 1895. The team was captained by J. Shuter who still holds the record as the longest serving captain of Surrey (county captain for fourteen seasons between 1880 and 1893), and also the eldest player to play for the county in 1909 against Oxford University aged 54.
