Lot Essay

This celebrated charlatan was in reality Guiseppe Balsamo (1743-1795). After being involved in the affair of the Diamond Necklace, he retired to England between 1786 and 1788. He married Lorenza Seraphina Felichiani in 1769 when she was 15.
Another example of this fan from the Duchet collection no. 150 was sold at Christie's South Kensington lot 137, 26 May 1981.
