PRINCESS BEATRICE MARY VICTORIA FEODORE,
NINTH AND YOUNGEST CHILD OF QUEEN VICTORIA (1857-1944);
& OTHERS
Sixteen autograph letters signed ("Beatrice"), to Sir Theodore and Lady Martin, together approximately 57 pages, 8, on various headed papers, the majority Balmoral Castle, others including Osborne House and 'Beatrice' monogram versions between 19 October 1878 and 5 August 1900.
Discussing material for the publishing of a pamphlet to increase awareness of the turbulent times experienced by her brother-in-law Prince Louis IV of Hesse "who has now terminated his sad though not inglorious career in Bulgaria, and is on his way back to his old home." She mentions a telegram sent to the Queen "stating his reasons for feeling it imperative to abdicate" (12 September 1886). Further communication explains that on arrival at Budtscheck, the Russian Consul "informed the Prince, that Prince Dolgorauky was already on his way to assume the Government of Bulgaria and Easter ?Roumelia. This could only mean an open declaration of war and the Prince had to find some instantaneous means to prevent Dolgorouky from carrying out his hostile mission. To arrest such a catastrophe, a confidential message to the Czar, appeared the last resource, and the Prince therefore sent for the Russian Consul again, giving him the telegram to send in cypher, as a strictly confidential document. It was hoped that this would build a golden bridge for the Czar, but alas! events have proved that this was a false hope. If the Prince is blamed for having humiliated himself before the Czar, one must remember that he did so, not to avert any danger from himself...but for the sake of an entire country, whose future happiness he was anxious to ensure" (12 September 1886).

A later letter thanks Sir Martin for his condolences after the death of Beatrice's brother, Prince Alfred , Duke of Edinburgh on 30 July 1990 (15 August 1900).

With two contemporary copies of letters written by Prince Louis describing the events surrounding his dethronement.

Together with a notelet from Princess Beatrice's husband Prince Henry of Battenberg sending good wishes and others.
